The Ravings of a Nerd

23 years ago today, a boy named Harry Potter boarded the Hogwarts Express. 23 years ago today, Ron Weasley asked if he could sit in Harry’s compartment. 23 years ago today, Hermione Granger asked they if they saw Neville’s toad. 23 years ago today, Harry, Ron, and Hermione were sorted into Gryffindor. 23 years ago today, the golden trio met.

On disrespect: “I have been in relationships where a man has disrespected me, and I don’t need to be friends with that man anymore. I don’t want to be the one going, ‘I’m cool, because I’m friends with all my exes.’ There’s a reason why you’re called an ex. I crossed you off my list. Moving on. You cross a line, you need to know that you’re going to walk this earth knowing that there’s an individual who has no respect for you.”  Zoe Saldana for Marie Claire Magazine, August 2014

indypendenthistory:

On Sep 13, 1944, a princess from India lay dead at Dachau concentration camp. She had been tortured by the Nazis, then shot in the head. Her name was Noor Inayat Khan. The Germans knew her only as Nora Baker, a British spy who had gone into occupied France using the code name Madeline. She carried her transmitter from safe house to safe house with the Gestapo trailing her, providing communications for her Resistance unit.

Oh my God, yes. Let’s talk about Noor Inayat Khan.
Wireless operators in France had a life expectancy of six weeks. Noor was actively transmitting for over three times as long.
While she was in France, every other wireless operator in her network was slowly picked off until she was the last radio link between London and Paris. It was “the most dangerous and important post in France”.
She was offered a way back to Britain and refused.
In fact, in her transmissions to London, she once said that she was having the time of her life, and thanked them for giving her the opportunity to do this.
She was captured by the Gestapo, but never gave up: she made three attempt escapes. One involved asking to take a bath, insisting on being allowed to close the door to preserve her modesty, and then clambering onto the roof of the Gestapo HQ in Paris.
Her last word before being shot was, “Liberté!”

The term BAMF was coined for such persons.

Her entire life, and her mother’s life as well, are FASCINATING. A Royal, Muslim, Anglo-Indian woman in WWII… Could we have a sweeping FACTUAL movie please. Like now?

Yet another story I would like to read.

Solar energy that doesn’t block the view

A team of researchers at Michigan State University has developed a new type of solar concentrator that when placed over a window creates solar energy while allowing people to actually see through the window. It is called a transparent luminescent solar concentrator and can be used on buildings, cell phones and any other device that has a clear surface. And, according to Richard Lunt of MSU’s College of Engineering, the key word is “transparent.”

Enver Gjokaj will play Agent Daniel Sousa, who will meet [Peggy] Carter while she takes on a new role at the pre-SHIELD Strategic Scientific Reserve in New York City.
The role continues Gjokaj’s relationship with the Marvel universe. He had a minor role as a “young cop” in Marvel’s The Avengers. He most recently had an arc on CBS’ Extant, TNT’s Rizzoli & Isles,Lifetime’s Witches of East End and AMC’s The Walking Dead. His breakout role came in Fox’s Dollhouse, which was produced by Agents of SHIELD exec producers Joss Whedon, Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen. (x)

Character description: Daniel Sousa is a war hero who walks using a leg brace, but finds dealing with office politics to be harder than working around his injury. Sousa is also a fiercely honorable, gentle man and we’re betting he becomes one of Peggy’s major allies. (x)
